Why is a consistent yoga and breathing practice so crucial for our mental and physical health?
A study done by the National Institute of Health showed that 10 weeks of yoga practice showed significant reduction of PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome) symptoms in patients who failed to respond to traditional western treatment. To heal trauma we need emotional regulation. This can be done by accessing the parasympathetic nervous system. Deep breathing and yoga stimulate the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is a bundle of nerves that run from the brain to every organ and system in the body. Trauma sets the nervous system haywire and causes hyper arousal. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system the body can be in ‘rest and digest state.’ People who have been through trauma are fearful of their own emotions and sensations around them. This is why addiction is common: its a distraction from the inner world. HEALING is about accessing and finding safety in the inner world. Become addicted to yoga and healing. We’ve all been through some type of trauma. Love yourself and begin your yoga practice to experience how it heals the relationship between your own heart and mind, creating inner peace, balance and emotional intelligence.
